[Closed] system paths and macroscripts

Why are custom macroscripts being stored deep into the documents and settings folder?

“C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Autodesk\3dsmax\2009 – 64bit\enu\UI\usermacros”

I thought that after evaluation, they should be put automaticly in the ui macroscripts directory?

“C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2009\ui\macroscripts”

Is it a good idea to change the system paths to point to the program files max directorys? Just to keep things simple?

It’s a vista thing… or actually, it’s a ‘proper practices’ thing, which was largely ignored in older releases of 3ds Max and in fact pretty much any Windows program.

The idea is that macro scripts you create are application-supporting data files, rather than files belonging to the actual workings of the application. Therefore they should not be saved to Program Files* . In fact, under Vista with a limited Account, that will fail outright. A similar thing was done to saving .max files – where in the past you’d just save them under program files*\Scenes, now they go to my documents*\Scenes.

I think you can change the paths (and I have in my XP install), but it’s probably better to just get used to how things are being done now… keep a shortcut to that deep folder, though

The idea behind it is nice, but I hate the default folder structure in Windows.

The path for usermacros in Vista is “C:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsmax\2008 – 32bit\enu\UI\usermacros”. However, the AppData folder is hidden by default.

You can either type it in manually, or type %appdata% into the adress bar.

or just opt to edit the (Maxroot)\InstallSettings.ini to show: useUserProfiles=0 and go back to the old way of storing extra crap.

Thanks Vsai.

Multi-user support is nice, but bloats the system when there’s only 1 user (I’ve never had more than 1 user on my home-pc or work-pc). Which is probably the reason why I don’t like Windows user settings.

No, no I don’t use vista, I hate it as much as I hate the viewcube, it is winxp 64 :buttrock:.

The shortcuts were allready placed, so I will keep things as default. Also I guess, the reason why autodesk pushes it this way is to keep each windows user max setup separate. So I understand why they abandon the implementation into program files dirs.

thanks guys

edit, here some more usefull information I just found:
