[Closed] Speedometer for Max
Ive been poking around here and there and in all the discussions concerning vehicle animation and I’ve yet to see anyone say anything about a speedometer. So I was thinking that its a very important thing in animating a car that the vehicle is traveling at the speed in which it would if it were a real car, hence the point of animating, lol. So, I was thinking last night, how would this be possible? Well to say that least, I think I’ve come up with a solution but the only problem is, I have no idea how to write maxscript This is where you fine people come in!
If I were to explain my long winded theory to you guys, would you be interested in creating something in script and post it for all to use?
Hope to hear from you soon!

Good idea, but you are 7 years late

This script will display the current and average speed of either a specified object or the current selection in about any units you can imagine. It also lets you dump a file with the speed of the object/selection on each frame.
It is really good for testing real-world speed situations.
A very simplified version of this script can be found in the MAXScript Reference – “How To … Output Object Data To File” for people to learn…
Haha, thats good to know. It’d be a shame if I were the only person to think of this. I find it very strange that I would get a response from you due to the fact that I was jsut browsing through my “Killer Tips” for max 6 and you were involoved with the script section So, I want to say its an honor to get a responce from you. Im told your’e the best! Any suggestions where I might start if I were to get into scripting?

P.S. It doesnt seem to want to work in Max 8
i think this book is very good for starting out with maxscript:
3ds Max 8 Maxscript Essentials
it’s official autodesk material, and covers a lot. i just had a quick glance when a colleague bought it, but it looked very solid.
Try reading through the tutorial intro in the MAXScript Reference and all the “How To … ” tutorials too. There, I explain step by step what I am doing and why – then you can try to modify those and start building your own tools. Once you get hooked, you can try downloading other people’s scripts and playing with them (adding stuff, dissecting the code etc.)
Also, our MAXScript DVDs from CG-Academy are rather good
Haha, I bet the DVD’s are exquisite! But, Ill try dabbling with the free stuff to see if it sticks and then I will deffinatly have to look into getting something more in depth like a dvd or a dedicated book. These things tend to get pricey, lol.
