[Closed] scripting book ???
i’m looking for some book on maxscript . i’m not an advanced programmer but i got some knowledge for it. anyways it got 2 option
or the new one for max8 by autodesk
wich one lool like a better choice to learn maxscript.
Mastering MAXScript and the SDK for 3D Studio MAX seem a bit old . i afraid some feature arent there anymore and i dont want to buy a book for nothing.
thank in advance . and maybe this could be useful for the new scripter who are looking for book too.
Hi,
I would recommend using the maxscript online reference. It is a good resource and is free.

I can’t comment on the books since I’ve never read either one, although I’m glad to see there’s a new one out. But I would highly recommend the MaxScript DVD’s from CG-Academy. I’ve watched them both and they’re very good.
Why the heck is “Mastering Maxscript and the SDK” going for 170 dollars?!? I bought mine for 10. And for a new scripter its not good because several of the examples need changed to work in newer versions of max.
I second what JHaywood said, the DVD’s by Bobo will give you the best teaching you can get, he helped write alot of the Maxscript reference.

i agree with the online ref, its y best friend right now.
Problem is i have some problem with reading on screen. Plus i can bring it wherever i want without having to be in front of a computer.(ahh! the pleasure of reading under a tree! )
I could print it but i think that would cost me the same price in printer ink & paper
the DVD sound great but they are quite pricey. Maybe later when i’ll be more advanced.
[edit] the maxscript SDK is 75$ can. 170$ is for the used… don’t ask me why
Whatever resource you use, I would strongly recommend just skimming through the latest Maxscript documenation for about an hour before you use another book/DVD/tutorial…etc. It will give you an overview of what you can do before you get into the details of how to do it.
Familiarity with the docs will help you get more out of any learning method you utilize…
I have never read a book about scripting or programming in general myself.
I used the MAXScript Reference (back when Max 2.0 came out, there were no books on MAXScript anyway, and we had to walk 20 miles through the snow to find more information ) and used to dissect the code of the few scripts that were available.
(Shows that you can learn a bit of scripting even without books ;))
Of course, I would recommend the CG-Academy DVDs, but I am biased…
Hey I learned most of what I know from Bobo directly on boards like this, it was actuly the office Max board. I started way back at the same tme as well and there was little or no information about the language and we were all just trying to sort it out our selves, well I was just trying to sort out what peogramming was all about and I let others back then sort out the language.
I know that this is over the head of some one new learning Max script but I just got Bobo’s latest DVD on the Matrix. I have gone through about 1/3 of it. Although I know and use every thing that has been talked about I have also learned a lot as well. Some of it has been clearifying what I already knew and some of it was new commands that I didn’t know about or did the hard way. Great DVD and I can’t wait to find the time to get to the end. I’m sure that it will begine cover information that I have never thought of, like writting a renderer, I don’t know where I would ever start with that. Great work Bobo, another winner and if the others are this good for the beginner level then they must be excelent.
I learned it the same way Bobo did, so I can’t recommend any books/tutorials. If you hate reading manuals as much as I do, I’d say grab some scripts from scriptspot, dissect them and use the online reference. Think of a simple maxscript you’d like to write and just start programming, learn from mistakes and improve as you go. I have been doing bits of programming since I had a C64 so this approach might be more difficult if you have no programming experience whatsoever.
Cheer,
Martijn
Hi
I know this is probably getting repeditive but I would also recomend the online help. It’s by far the best resource (ok it’s almost the only!) I’ve ever used.
A big advantage is that after a while you will know your way around the help so you’ll be able to find any topic you need.
I’m also waiting for a copy of Bobo’s new DVD to arrive which I’m kind of excited about (hurry back from holidays Chris!) so I’d probably recomend Laszlo’s and Bobos DVD’s from cgacademy.
John Wainwright the creator of Maxscript produced a DVD with 3 1/2 hours of video, but I’ve never seen it. It’s called Maxsciprt 101
http://www.lyric.com/maxscript101/index.htm
Start with the help, the tutorials, the how to’s and look at other scritps. and then you’ll at least be more educated about which resource is better!
J.
Thank for all your input guys. i think i’ll stick with the help file for a moment.
the DVD from john Wainwright seem well done too.
Thank again for the help
