[Closed] Script Idea – Matte material that covers only selected objects
Aug 31, 2014 8:19 pm
Hi guys,
This is the idea I have for long time now and I would make a script or plugin or shader for it. The main purpose of this thread is to gather opinions and probably find existing way of doing thing.
The idea is to have some type of Matte material that "covers" only certain objects. What I basically need this for is placing lights geometry on the large ceiling array. Instead of punching a lot of holes I would use some type of helper object with special Matte object that would "make" a hole in the ceiling during the render time.
That would make not only placement of lights much easier but also moving lights around (moving real holes is disaster in some cases)
You can check attachment for some screenshot.
Thanks!

Do you have vRay? There is a vRayDistance texture that could do this exact thing, you just have to add the cut-out object to the shader and add it to the opacity channel. Shifting the light objects would then automatically cutout in the new location. You just have to make sure “inside solid” is checked

That’s fantastic! Thank you Lonerobot!
BTW this thing can help doing clear cutouts without boolean! Oh, I can’t wait when I get to work to test it on a heavy geometry…
