[Closed] Metaball Script Issues

Hello Everyone,

I have recently been trying to read and work on the Metaball Particle Flow Script in the MaxScript reference file. But it does not work for me. I guess that I have been doing just what they say.

Make a script flow and set parameters and put the script operator with the same script… Why am I not able to see the mesh?

30+ views and no replies… Does that mean the Question is a pretty dumb one??

To see the mesh, the Display operator should be set to Geometry.
I just copied the script from the help into a Script Operator, switched Display to Geometry and lowered the speed a bit to create better blobs. It worked for me.

The real question here is, why do you even want to use this? This example was from the very first version of Particle Flow (a.k.a. Max 5.5) and was written before there was a BlobMesh compound object that would support Particle Flow directly. Today you also have access to pWrapper and Frost as faster alternatives, so this hack (which btw was originally provided by Grant Adam, the author of RPM) is completely academic (it shows how you could grab geometries from scene objects created on the fly). It has no practical value for making blobs out of PFlow. That’s the only reason I have left it in the help for all these years, but it looks like I should remove to avoid confusing people…

I tallied everything possible and did it many times.
Gosh!!! I tried it twice more.
Which version of max are you using? I am using 2009. Below are the screen shots.

It is strange indeed. I am using Max 2011. I have 2010 and 2012 installed too, but I never used 2009 (I hated it even before it was released), so I cannot test there.

But this does not answer my question – why do you want to run this obsolete script? To learn scripting PFlow, or to do something useful? In the former case, I can understand it, in the latter case you should forget it ever existed and go using BlobMesh, pWrapper or Frost.

Actually I just wanted to learn the particle Flow scripting…
I shall try out Frost for sure.
I just downloaded max 2010 and tried in that, it works very well…
But 2010 has a wierd problem i.e. when I make a tool using visual maxscript editor and then i edit that again,

e.g. – i make a button and then i save it and then i re-open the editor and made another button,
there is a number that is added between the two lines which are the code for the creation of the buttons.

Basically I want to learn things and find the maxscript reference good enough… I would appreciate if you could point out some places where I can get tuts or reference from…
As cgSociety is always there but I need to make my base stronger and cannot always post small things also here!!!

There are two DVDs from CG Academy on scripting PFlow. There is not nearly enough info about how to use MAXScript with PFlow in the MAXScript Reference, because it was meant as a Reference, not a tutorial book.

And you SHOULD post ANY questions you have here, as everybody else does. If others know the answer, they will post it if they have the time and desire to do so…
