[Closed] import simulation data [scripting noob]

Hi

I’m not a scripter by any means, yet I’m looking to import some data that’s output from a simulation package into max.

It’ll bascially either be animated clouds or smoke type data and as I’ll be working soley in 3dsmax i’m approaching the simulation developers to ask if they’re able to output their data to suit my needs, so i’m hoping for some scripting direction in terms of:
[ol]
[li]What sort of importer/ import options I might need to create in Max [/li][li]How would I go about reformating the data so that it reads in cleanly (if necessary)[/li][li]re-meshing a set of points / nulls mesh – perhaps even on frame by frame basis[/li][li]how I might go about getting ascii type files into max in the first place (sorry if this sounds basic, I’ve not done this before)[/li][li]formatting: point name, frame number & x,y,z translations – is this enough??[/li][/ol]Again aplogies if it’s a broad question, just kind of stuck for answers with this…

Thanks

Don’t know about remeshing a point cloud inside 3ds Max but otherwise, you could take a look at what Realflow does. They have a fairly simple file format for storing such type of data, including free plugins to load it.

Other than that, maybe the 3ds Max PointCache file format could help you, but I believe it does not cater for data with changing numbers of points…
