[Closed] How come?
“For us. it’s always been important to use the best tool for the Job.
A lot of the Artist here use both 3ds Max and Maya on a regular basis.”
Emmanuel Valdez
Chief Creative Officer, High Moon Studios.
So Autodesk quote this guy in their 3ds Max front page,
with this I must understand they trying to let us know why is so
important to make both apps to work along well right?
So I was wondering “How come” I can’t assign a simple
Alt+LMB shortcut to the “’Arc Rotate” or the Alt+RMB to the “Zoom” viewport option,
you know, like Maya.
I know there is a plugin for this, made by “Draster”.
(wich means a lot of people prefer to work with this orbit system).
I use Maya at work, but I prefer 3ds max and that’s what I use at home,
And I have to admit that orbiting in Maya is way more intuitive than max’s system.
No wonder why XSI gives you the option to orbit like this, and not to mention
Silo, Mudbox and so on…
So, How come Autodesk doesn’t give us the freedom to choose?
they own both Apps now.
Why do we have to buy a plugin for something so simple?
I mean, I’m not a Programer but I don’t think this is something so difficult to do right?
or is it?
This is the only thing that I miss from maya when I’m working in max.
maybe there is already a Script or a workaround in order to achieve this.
what do you guys think?
or I’m the only one who’s missing this feature in max?
Cheers!
- I think you posted to the wrong forum.
- I think 3ds max’s navigation tools work just fine, but I have only used Maya a handful of times.
- Some things and navigation hotkeys are hardcoded in 3ds max, and I have no idea what it would take and/or break to make what you want happen.
Personally I think Maya should switch to the 3ds max navigation approach.

Is there a way to move this thread to another forum? and if so, wich one do you recommend?
-
hmmm… I do respect your opinion, but you know how it goes, different people, different taste.

maybe true, but if “Digital Raster” was able to do it, why can Autodesk just do it?
I honestly prefer just to push the Alt key with my thumb and do the rest with my mouse, max’s navigation it’s almost there, but I hate to go with my cursor all the way to the corner or have to use another extra shortcut in order to be able to zoom in or out. -
Oh Please God no!!
Anyway, thanks for your time.
P.S. Your Avatar makes me think you’re a mean & grumpy guy!
MMB = Pan
Alt+MMB = Rotate
Ctrl+Alt+MMB = Zoom
So everything can be done with hotkeys in 3ds max, just not the same ones as in Maya. I am sure AME has their reasons for not doing it, and just cause someone can do something and get away with it doesn’t mean it is right. DigitalRaster since, not part of AME, doesn’t have to go through the same protocol/quality measures to get things done. You also don’t know what kind of things DR had to break to make it work.

*About the Avatar, it is a character from Family Guy the TV show.
“MMB = Pan

Yeah… close but no cigar…
“And just cause someone can do something and get away with it doesn’t mean it is right. DigitalRaster since, not part of AME, doesn’t have to go through the same protocol/quality measures to get things done.”
Good point there!
“You also don’t know what kind of things DR had to break to make it work.”
Well, they say their plugin doesn’t affect anything at all in max,
now, I wonder how true this may be.
Hope Bobo could give us a light in that matter.
Oh yes “The Family Guy!” I knew it,
it just that I don’t get to see much TV anymore.
Not sure what I have to do with it, but here is my opinion:
Making one application mimic the other can alienate users, for example I would be very angry if the Max viewport navigation shortcuts were changed to Maya’s without the option to keep the old shortcuts – after 11 years, they are second nature to me, and Maya’s feel…alien.
Everything that can potentially affect the workflow of individual artists, including all mouse controls and shortcut combinations, SHOULD be customizable. In Max, they are not at the moment (at least out of the box)
I know some very smart people working at Autodesk and I am sure that sooner or later, we will be able to set up Maya viewport controls to work like in Max and vice-versa. You should understand that developing plugins for Max is much easier than developing Max itself – a one line code change in the core of Max could potentially cause an avalanche of problems, thus requires careful planing and execution and takes time.
If a plugin solves your problem today, do not wait for Autodesk to solve it tomorrow.
Bobo, once again thanks for your input,
you wrote ” Not sure what I have to do with it”
well, some how I knew you would give us this kind of info:
” I know some very smart people working at Autodesk and I am sure that sooner or later, we will be able to set up Maya viewport controls to work like in Max and vice-versa. There is hope!
So if ALT+RMB is changed to a nav system when happens to your ALT+RMB quad? I can’t do without that one myself. Once you changed that you would then complain that certain options are not in the quads.
I hear people bitch about this all the time. I don’t know why as I go from one to the other with out a problem. Takes me all of about 1 min in to adapt to the other.
Max and Maya are different apps with different work flows. One that still drives me nuts is watching Maya people treat the modifier stack as if it were the history. Or complain that there is no flexibility in setting up characters but they have never used a list controller.
If you are working in Max then work in Max and don’t try and make it into Maya. That goes for the oposite as well.
Don’t forget, I hear Max people bitch about the way Maya works as well.
so…there ya go.
hahahahaha! I know I know touché!
and that’s what I’m talking about, the freedom of choice,
remember that I’m a max user, I mean I have to work with maya now, but I
love my max, I just happen to like that particular feature, and that’s all.
Cheers!
And personally even having used Maya and Max more than any other app I love “S” like XSI.
I Really really really really wish that we could replace that hotkey (alt) with “S”.
