Hi hblan,

It is not neccessary to use scripts when using max. Scripts can be used to accomplish things that can’t normally be done. I use scripts every day in my normal modelling and rendering to customise max for how I want to work.
Many scripts have become so powerful that people think they should be incorporated into max. Indeed, many tools and features in max are actually scripts. As far as company’s needing scripts, we use them all the time.

Also, scripted controllers are a very powerful animation tool, that in Max8 are going to be much easier to use.

If you want to learn how to script, learn. if you don’t then you will still be able to do what ever you need.

do what i want , what i need ,what i like .do everything that can give me a happy life . so i need friends .yes . thanks .

Scripting and Programming are going to be needed in any custom pipeline, doesn’t matter which tool you use. for personal use or even as a freelancer it probably won’t do you nearly as much good as on an organised pipeline with many people/departments

i think one of the mayor reasons why maya is so successful on feature films is is mel, the api and it’s ascii file format.

Scripting is very useful in any application that supports it and I think EVERY 3d artist should have at least a basic understanding of scripting.
