[Closed] What, is the CGTalk finally dead?
If you guys need any new place, I am willing to happily contribute in any way.
It’s a shame. I’ve been using the forum for years. Whenever I had a problem that I wasn’t able to solve I always found a new lead to follow here in the forums. Did I contribute much? No, but that’s also because there are almost always people around with more knowledge who give better answers than me – I think you guys have been maneuvering yourself into a corner a little bit because everyone expected some of the gurus will jump in.
That said, I don’t think a new forum will solve that issue. The maxscript knowledge that is “preserved” here won’t be recreated somewhere else. If this forum dies, new scripters will have a much harder time.
The new design is awful and I rarely look into the forums anymore because of that. I find it confusing and frustrating.
New site design is shockingly bad, and the site was already going downhill beforehand with bizarre decisions being made by admins concerning the removal of certain features. Not to mention the fact that people are flocking to social media rather than forums nowadays anyways, so instead of changes to the site resulting in the attraction of new users, they’re simply causing old users to become more frustrated and leave.
Well I guess some things change. It was probably around 2004 when I joined after I first started scripting. Back then it was all Bobo and Swami Lama. This site was an incredible resource and something that helped me transition from the delicate beginner to the rank amateur I am today. I don’t tend to script anymore.
The simple fact is it’s harder and harder to process the internet background noise for meaningful content.
After just few weeks using this forum I must to say the experience has been great:
- UI is great, you can post code in a similar way than StackOverflow, that should be the bare minimum for modern web responsive Q&A or coding forums nowadays
- All my questions have been answered so far, I’ve been using Stackoverflow for couple of years and I know for sure those type of questions wouldn’t have been answered that fast unless given high bounties
- People who answered my questions have been really nice and polite, so even if this a forum it’s not the typical forum where kids messing around
In summary, I must to say I really like this forum so far and each time I’ve got new questions when coding my max stuff this will be the first place to try before the other sites.
the problem is that some of us in this forum still remember the time when the forum was better
Denis, first to share some gratitude. I’ve learned many great tips from you over the last decade.
I too sense a falloff. But what I sense isn’t isolated to this site in particular. There are some things specific to this site that put me off somewhat–mainly that I need to reset my password every time I want to post now. So there is some backend issue that might interfere with some people posting.
But I have seen a very poignant change in the community in the last several years. I think that the way people use the Internet itself is changing some. And I think that in terms of Max, there are many more distractions than there were just a few years ago–now people have so many options to consume their attentions like the rise of free game engines, maturing of Blender, the explosion of tools like Substance, etc… this all means that Max sits in a different ecosystem than it did just a few years ago.
I also think that longtime users can grow weary of seeing the same questions/threads over and over. I’ve found myself less motivated to participate in public forums over the last few years. This is not a sign of losing interest in Max so much as an issue of time and efficiency. At this point, I’ve started to lose patience with questions that are easily answered on Google in 20 seconds.
In any event, I’m more prone to skim over CGS Max thread a couple times a week–but only post every now and then anymore. Maybe others are doing similarly. Maybe not.

I have used CgTalk in the past so much and really loved the very active community. Today I decided to check it out again. Was very sad to see this post on top.
I got plenty of amazing feedback and support by many very talented maxscript artists, like Dennist, Bobo, Pen, LoneRobot etc. Thank you so much for all your expert knowledge.
I also wonder why I vanished from the board for so long. I think Cgtalk is pretty crowded with subforums and it takes a while to even scroll down far enough. Also the search function was never great and is now completely broken for me.
It seems many people have wandered off, perhaps to other forums. Perhaps just youtube or facebook. But maybe the 3ds Max community is just very inactive in total? It’s an old and established software. It is lacking fresh spirit and inspiration. It feels clunky and unloved.
To me, mcg was such a huge disappointment. Having a great node based interface to do procedural stuff would have been such a good addition. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the hang out of it. And now I also think about trying Houdini or Blender instead.
I will do my best to check out this forum more regularly. I use maxscript/C# more or less every day. My company (Ubisoft) uses Max on almost all projects. So the community is there…it’s just not active it seems.
CGTalk is dead? I only noticed today, after not having visited in for 10+ years.
The angry and pedantic tone of many of the participants became tiresome and made the forum unuseful.
But now even those trolls are gone, leaving just some spambots posting about plywood and keto diets.
lol, do you really believe that was the reason and not the users switching to social networks and messengers?
site redesign and especially forum engine change made it worse and eventually made it unusable with search being broken etc…
