This has more far reaching uses! In forensic visualization, finding the closing distance between two vehicles is a very desirable thing. Its not really that easy though. You can link a tape and its target to the objects but it doesn’t really give the correct distance to initial contact between them. The distance should be calculated based on the closest vert,edge or face on each vehicle. So the work around is to use linked xform with a tape on the areas of the vehicles you know will contact.
Using the bounding box would work as long as it could always use the closest point on the bounding box…like if the cars are perpindicular and then end up hitting head on.
