[Closed] Python 4 Max 2014

 JHN

I’m not saying I don’t agree max has worse issues, but lets also look at it from a different perspective. From a entertainment perspective (the industry I’m in) python is a good way to integrate in existing pipelines (as would be alembic), if max get’s more ground in VFX places (next to big anim studio’s the sexiest places to work (again it’s all about appearance)) that would make Max ‘shine’ more for the future. Max has big image problems from my POV so fixing the obvious to ensure max’s future is beneficial for all us maxers.

My 2 cents,
-Johan

I believe that’s the most solid reason. So they can port Maya users to Max, with an attractive ‘hook’.
That and the fact that Python is a widely used/accepted language, not only for 3d.

Perhaps this is an attempt to unify the scripting language across their tools and also catch more developers.

For a company, this may not be as bad, because if you have some good Python developers you can use them to code tools for different software without ‘paying’ for learning MaxScript. So in certain way it makes sense.

Neither am I against anything, generally speaking, if it is for good, but I see the Python integration as a waste at this point.

Perhaps the decision was made based on user’ requests, perhaps not, I can’t tell. But if they keep spreading this way, it certainly might fail. 3ds Max has more serious issues that should be addressed before attempting to integrate another scripting language, for example overall performance. But what is more valuable from the Marketing point of view?

Speaking of the actual implementation of Python in Max 2014 Extension, does anyone have an leads on examples or documentation of any kind?
I’m trying to get it up and running at my studio and am having a hell of a time getting started.
Thanks for any leads.
Is it still in beta, by the way?

Look at this thread on AREA

Thanks for the suggestion.
I’ve seen that thread and I’ll give it another look.
More specifically, I’m trying to get PyQt up and running with Max 2014 and am still running into some strange issues where QtGui classes and functions are being masked somehow, presumably by sip.
Still trying to understand how it all fits together to allow me to track it down.
My best guess currently is a sip version incompatibility or configuration issue.

I bought pycharm Johan, but since i found http://www.sublimetext.com/ I haven’t even used it. It’s the best python editor IMHO.

Just be patient, give it another release and they’ll put in the fortran bridge we’ve all been waiting for.

Sublime is the best text editor of any kind. Even has a maxscript language def you can find. It has powers I have yet to fully comprehend.

I believe this is more important and crucial issues tha adsk must solve first rather than integrating more and more tools… i agree too with denis T too…would C# is not enough ?
