Is this possible via maxscript? I want to generate a searchable series of thumbnails with keywording that can be accessed in image browsers.
MAXScript access to this extended information is limited I’m afraid. The targa interface allows you to specify an “Author” and several “Comment” fields (See “Targa : BitmapIO” in the MAXScript manual), but this is not the case for jpegs nor gifs.

There are some activeX/.net assets available that utilise the addition of data to images.
I haven’t tried one of the commercial available, yet.
I just added exif data to images:

Exiv2 can also add keywords but is an external solution.
I was thinking about integrating this as a renderEffect.
It depends rather on how(interface) and where(workflow) you want to add the data than on the technique.
