[Closed] Drag Tool for Max, similar to Lightwave?
Is there an existing drag tool for moving vertices around when modeling in max? To be more specific, I want to click on any given vertex and move it, without having to select it first. Lightwave has this tool and it improves modeling speed a great deal. I’m using Max 5.1. Thanks in advance for any info, especially pointers to scripts and such.
Unless I’m misinterpreting your question, you can do this with the built in move-tool. Click ‘n drag any vertex to move it around. You do lose your previous vertex selection though, is that what you’ld like to avoid?

Correct me if I’m wrong since the last version I used is R5 but the move tool won’t do it exactly like say LW’s drag or Wings3d’s Tweak.
What I mean is when you move-drag a vertex in Max,it’ll move on the last XYplane you used with the gizmo/widget.(in perspective at least)
It does the job better than select and move though.
You could also specify a certain plane and lock it but then you’ll have to change it when you switch viewport angles.
Makes sense?
Thanks for the replies. the F8 mode gets me close but not all the way to Lighwave-ish goodness. Oh well, there’s always the possibility that Discreet will hear the call and add a toggle or something for this behavior.
There’s a setting that will prevent locking the transform plane when you use the gizmo. Setting the center box of the gizmo to transform relative to the screen, when combined with the latter setting, will let you do something reasonably close to Wings3D’s ‘tweak’ mode, which sounds an awful lot like how Lightwave’s drag tool must work.

Thx LFShade, that’s close, but not quite all the way. The sticking point for me is that if I change seemingly any other setting I get stuck to a plane again. Truthfully, this workaround gets me about 90% of the way there, so it’s probably how I’ll work.
Thanks again for the helpful advice.
