[Closed] $cameraName.near/farCameraClippingPlane

I have posted this in the challange thread.

…“When i do architecture, and i use a camera clipping plane in order to avoid a wall or something, if the camera is not perpendicular to the wall, and the space is small, the plane always cuts the wall, or other objects in the space in a strange way …
I´m sure all those who do architecture (especially interiors) understand what i mean.
So i do not know if it can be done by scripting, but ROTATING THE CAMERA CLIP PLANE on every axis would be a great thing to have around …”

Would it be possiable to script this action ? is there a method for accessing the $cameraName.nearCameraClippingPlane and $cameraName.farCameraClippingPlane x,z,y rotation values ?

i made a small exagerated scene for demonstration :

in RED normal clipping planes, in GREEN the wanted angle …

anyone ?

I think i might have found a way, but i would be happy to hear other ideas …

I don’t believe that can be done, the planes aren’t gizmos so they don’t have a rotation property, and so wouldn’t have maxscript access. Maybe it can be done somewhere in the sdk, but I don’t believe there’s a way to do it through maxscript.

Thanks Neil, in fact, all the methods I have tried faild.
I even tried to script a special camera with custom planes, but for no good.
Sometimes it just seems increadible how 3dsMax can be so powerfull andon the same time, lack some very basic things …
Maybe the Mighty Bobo could help …

I think you’ll find that with and piece of software. Mind you, I hadn’t even thought about rotating a clipping plane until you posted your question, so what’s “basic” to you may not be basic to me.

Yes , i know … i never intended to complain about max, i love that App…

well… this is a problem that (i think) only occurs when you do Interior architecture of small spaces, AND with a non horizontal (or near horizontal) composition.

Sometimes, (a lot actually) the exactly right composition of the frame ,along with the right lens size ,zoom, distortion etc. is when the camera is not horizontal to it’s target. in that case, if you have walls, or any other object, in the way, it will be cut in an unregular manner (like the example i posted).

Going in front of the wall , will reduce my view, and increasing the angle to compansate, will of course cause distortion.

And so you say:I will remove the walls … Nop , that is impossiable if you have Mirrors in the room , if you do all around animation, or if you have other space around that will change all your illumination settings…

I have heard “complains” about that from various collegues of mine in various studios, but i am aware that this is a problem only of Architects and those who do Arch Viz for interiors.

When i’ll get home, i will post a real scene to to better demonstrate the problem.
